House in Forest

Going up that river was like travelling back to the earliest beginnings of the world, when vegetation rioted on the earth and the big trees were kings. An empty stream, a great silence, an impenetrable forest.

'Heart of Darkness', by Joseph Conrad.

Inspired by the appropriation of natural landscapes as a narrative device in Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness, the drawing explores the narrative potential of architectural representation. The imagined space is one where motion is motivated by emotion, with its serpentine route curating a psychophysical journey from the security of the river - the singular geographical marker and way of return - into the uncharted depths of the rainforest.
